With a little bit of light trickery, I was able to capture this stunning photomicrograph of a diatom. By shifting my dark field filter a little bit, it casted a shadow on one side of the slide and portrayed a feeling of depth.
You may have noticed the purple-ish coloring around the outer rim of the cell. Since the diatom’s cell wall is made of silica, it refracts light and can appear a variety of colors.
I really like how this image brings out the depth of the diatom and shows it’s colors and cell wall. Great job!
